Report: Warrington Town Women 1-0 Litherland REMYCA

Warrington Town managed to keep three points at home with an own goal from Litherland being the only ball in the net despite a dominant performance from the hosts.

The Yellows were coming off the back of a 3-1 win in the Alliance Design & Print Plate against Blackpool and succeeded in continuing victory with a vital clean sheet against bottom-of-the-league Litherland REMYCA.

The Yellows had a much better start of the two teams, with several chances inside the opening 20 minutes.

Fortune came their way when Sam Hassall battled Litherland defender Daisy Coughlin for a loose ball. Goalie Olivia Cooke rushed off her line, too.

The Yellows striker was strong and knocked the defender off balance, causing her to accidentally kick the ball past her own goalie and into the back of her own net.

The visitors presented no real threat throughout the game except in the 74th minute, when they hit the post from long range.

The Yellows were solid in managing both possession and their shape all game. There was some drama in the 34th minute when Litherland manager Mark Atkinson was given two consecutive yellow cards and a red card for dissent against the referee.

Yellows desperately looked to double their lead with Rachel Dickenson and Opposition POTM Sam Hassall presenting threats all game.

Pinpoint passes kept coming from Dickenson and Hassall was a nuisance for Litherland’s back line all game, but unfortunately, the striker couldn’t manage to bag a goal of her own.

The Yellows almost got what they wanted in the 78th minute when Sam Hassall and Jess Carberry both hit the crossbar - Hassall’s initial shot from the edge of the box being tipped onto the bar by Cooke and Carberry’s rebound shot also finding the woodwork.

The visitors had a corner late on in the game and it was all or nothing - the ball was whipped in and swung in towards Donohue and the numerous bodies around her.

Still, the Yellows goalie kept her composure and claimed the ball with some safe hands which was the last bit of action before the referee blew his whistle.

The Yellows next travel to Wallasey to face high-flying Poulton Victoria.

They remain in the relegation zone but just two points from safety with five league games remaining.
