Report: Warrington Town 2-3 Workington

Workington secured safety from relegation with a stunning comeback from two goals down to win 3-2 at Warrington Town.

After 45 minutes, it looked like the Reds would be reliant on results elsewhere to keep things in their own hands going in to the final game of the season next week as they trailed 2-0, but they turned it around to guarantee their place in the Northern Premier League Premier Division for another year.

Mid-table Warrington had taken the lead after just 60 seconds, Elliott Morris latching onto a Reece Daly throughball and sliding his shot inside the far post.

There was anxiety in Workington’s first-half performance, and they were perhaps fortunate that Steven Swinglehurst stayed on the pitch following an off-the-ball clash with Kallan Murphy.

Then shortly after Murphy had hit the bar with a header, Daly sneaked a free-kick in at the near post to double the hosts’ advantage.

Workington rolled their sleeves up at half-time and were gifted a way back into the match on 55 minutes, when a clash between Jack Doyle and goalkeeper Liam Isherwood enabled Jake Allan to dribble the ball into an empty net.

Allan was a threat on the right, and Workington sensed the opportunity and equalised on 70 minutes when substitute Josh Palmer guided a header home.

With nothing much coming back the other way, Workington now saw the chance to secure safety on the day, and flying blocks by Evan Gumbs and Jayden Lloyd denied goal-bound chances, until with nine to play, Tom Stephenson latched onto a long ball over the top and bounced a finish past Isherwood to complete the turnaround and send the away fans into raptures.
