Report: Warrington Town 2-1 Ashton United

Warrington Town completed their run of four home games with a fourth successive win as they saw off Ashton United 2-1.

Reece Daly was at it again, firing home the opener from 20 yards, just three days after two similar efforts had helped see off Lancaster City.

Niall Watson’s header looked to have sealed the points with 15 minutes to play, but former Yellows striker Enock Lusiama’s tap-in set up a nervy finish.

Paul Carden’s side held on to continue their winning run and lift themselves up to 16th in the league table.

There wasn’t much in the first half, Liam Isherwood getting down sharply to save Scott Burgess’ shot early on, and then in the final few minutes, Liam Brazier forced similar out of Jordan Eastham.

Otherwise, it was a case of crosses from the right not leading to anything more for the Yellows as the sides went in goalless at half-time.

The Yellows lost defender Troy Bourne to a possible hamstring injury early in to the second half but took the lead in familiar fashion on 61 minutes.

James Melhado drove inside and laid the ball off to Daly, who created space for himself to fire an arched shot past Eastham from 20 yards out.

Former Yellows midfielder Mikey O’Neill had a shot deflected over the bar at the other end before Watson headed a second for the hosts.

Josh Vela’s sharp pass found Daly, and his back-heel returned the ball to Vela, whose cross looped up for Watson to head home for his first league goal for the club.

That looked like being that but a stroke of fortune gave Ashton a route back in to the match.

Jack Doyle’s tackle saw the ball bounce favourably in to the path of Darius Osei, and his scuffed shot was tapped in at the back post by Lusiama, making his first appearance against the Yellows since his departure earlier this month.

It gave the visitors something to go at, but despite the introduction of big man Tom Denton, they failed to create anything of note.

Warrington Town now have successive away games at Hebburn Town (Saturday) and Bamber Bridge (Tuesday).
