Report: Warrington Town 2-0 Hereford

Warrington  Town downed high-flying Hereford to seal Paul Carden’s first home win back in charge.

Evan Gumbs, making his 150th appearance for the Yellows, headed home the rebound after Connor Woods’ free-kick had bounced out from the underside of the bar, and barely seconds later, Hereford were reduced to 10 men when Sammy Robinson was sent off for a rash challenge on Jay Harris.

Despite their struggles at times this season, the Yellows boast a steady record against National League North’s top teams, and they sealed the win in injury time through skipper Josh Amis, to add to their earlier home win over full-time Kidderminster, and points on the road against top sides Scunthorpe United and Chorley.

Hereford had only lost once in the league all season and it was an open game in the first quarter, Dan Atherton’s strong hand denying Akheem Rose’s drilled shot.

Yusifu Ceesay, a menace when the clubs last met in April, then put a dangerous ball in that was headed away from virtually his own goal line by Andy White.

The opening goal came midway through the first half, Woods’ curling free kick came off the underside of the bar and bounced out from the goal line, and Gumbs was quickest to react to head home.

The cheers had barely died down from that incident when the home fans had something else to cheer about, when Robinson was shown the red card by referee Joe Moss, after a challenge on Jay Harris where he went studs up over the ball.

Although Hereford had lost a man, they upped the tempo and had the better of the rest of the first half.

Their pressure built up to Alex Babos crashing a shot against the crossbar from 20 yards.

In the second half, Ceesay cut inside and hit a shot that flew just wide via a deflection and then White cleared off the line from a deep Babos corner.

The pressure came in fits and starts, and it was the 90th minute before Atherton had to make a telling intervention.

He saw Tate Campbell’s shot through bodies very late, got down and pushed the ball out and then was back on his feet quickly to block the rebound.

The Yellows then went on the counter-attack and Matty McDonald thought he had won the game when he lifted the ball over Aaron Chapman, but the ball went agonisingly over the crossbar.

Atherton’s double-save appeared to have taken the sting out of Hereford, and Bohan Dixon had a golden opportunity to sew it up when he sat down his man but could only poke his shot at Chapman.

The second goal did finally come in injury time, substitute Amis picking his spot from 20 yards for his second goal in three games, and secure a first home win since August.

The Yellows are next in action away at Darlington on Saturday.
