Mixed emotions for Beesley after Brackley defeat

Warrington Town manager Mark Beesley was keen to take the positives from Saturday’s 2-0 defeat at Brackley Town. 

A Danny Newton double helped take the Saints top of the National League North, and in doing so inflict a fourth defeat of the season upon the Yellows.

Still, it was a much-improved display from Beesley’s men in the wake of their Bank Holiday Monday defeat to Curzon Ashton. They carved out a number of clear-cut chances and were denied the afternoon’s opening goal midway through the first half when Peter Clarke’s header was ruled out for offside.

Connor Woods and Dylan Mottley-Henry both struck the woodwork, while second half substitute Isaac Buckley-Ricketts fired into the side-netting on the stretch.

“At times it was a good show from us,” Beesley said post-match.

“We created a lot of chances, which is something we spoke about. We hit the post twice, had a goal disallowed when the lads were convinced it wasn’t offside. There were scrambles, we missed one-on-ones.

“We had chances, which is pleasing, but obviously if you can’t score and you concede, you’re going to continue to lose. It’s an obvious statement, but we need to be better.”

Brackley’s aerial threat proved to be a constant thorn in the side of the Yellows, with Newton breaking the deadlock on the rebound from close range after his initial header was well kept out by Dan Atherton –  who returned to the starting XI to make his 50th club appearance.

Another Newton header wrapped up the points six minutes from time, and Beesley admits his side need to be far more ruthless in both boxes if they want to be successful in the National League North.

“We score goals as a team and concede goals as a team. We’ve got two centre forwards missing, but I can’t fault the lads at that end of the pitch,” he added.

“They’ve had chances and given everything for the club, but at the moment we’re not getting the results that we’d like. We’ve got to keep going. On another day we score two or three [against Brackley], not just one.

“We’ve got to keep the back door shut. The two goals were really poor from our point of view. It’s becoming a constant theme, and at this level you’re going to get punished.”
