Matty McDonald: It feels great to be back

Warrington Town midfielder Matty McDonald admits there was no better feeling than scoring three minutes into his return to the starting line-up on Tuesday night.

McDonald fired home from Isaac Buckley-Ricketts’ low cross at Buxton on Tuesday night, paving the way for what would prove to be the Yellows’ biggest-ever win in the National League North.

A second half Buckley-Ricketts hat-trick, plus further goals from Tom Hannigan and Matty Grivosti, saw Town put the Bucks to the sword in a 6-0 thrashing at the Tarmac Silverlands Stadium.

For McDonald – who made his first start since recovering from a knee injury which has kept him out for over four months of the season – the performance and result were all the more sweet.

“Tuesday night away games can’t get much better and those results don’t come often, so you have to enjoy them,” he said.

“I know we would all prefer to have played in nicer conditions, but we adapted to it well.

“Personally I couldn’t have asked for a better start. It felt great to be able to be back in the starting 11.

“I’ve been waiting for it for a while, and it’s been tough watching the lads week in week out and not being involved as I’d like to be. Now I’m involved again, I just want to play as much as possible and see where the season takes us.”

Tuesday’s result came despite the Yellows being without captain and striker Josh Amis, who was ruled out with an ankle injury sustained in training.

Nevertheless, McDonald is confident that the quality in the squad will see them continue to produce positive results, with a tough-looking, near 350-mile round trip to Blyth Spartans next on the agenda this Saturday.

“We have probably only had everyone available for a couple of weeks, if that, all season, so having players that can come in and the level not drop is important, and something that works very well for us,” the Yellows midfielder added.

“Personally, I haven’t been looking too much at the table and where we sit, because we’ve played every team now and we shouldn’t fear anyone.

“Likewise, we know that on any given day, a game can be difficult. If we just focus on the next task in front of us and see where that takes us, then come the back end of the season, we can maybe think a little about what results mean in and around us.”
