Matty McDonald excited by Liversedge challenge

Warrington Town midfielder Matty McDonald believes Liversedge will provide a different challenge to most, as the squad looks to return to the play-off spots this weekend.

Town dropped out of the top five after Gainsborough Trinity beat Marine in midweek. The Holy Blues are two points ahead of Town, but have played two games more.

This is due to The Yellows having their last two games postponed because of weather conditions, including Saturday’s crunch clash with fellow promotion hopefuls Radcliffe.

Despite the battle for position, McDonald says the squad will just be focusing on their own matches and are eager to get back to playing.

“It’s hard to not keep an eye on the clubs around us, but there’s nothing we can do about that, he said. 

“We can only play our games and see where that takes us. 

“We just need to focus on our matches and if we keep the run going that we are on, that should get us where we want to be. I’ll be honest, I’m just eager to get playing again after the frustrating couple of weeks we’ve had.

“I think we all are disappointed that the games have been cancelled because of the run we are on. 

“As a group, we just want to keep playing. The break is quite long really and it’s meant we have had to work harder in training and then outside of training in our own time, but the lads know what we are fighting for and hopefully it will be worth it come the end of the season.”

Next up, the Yellows welcome Liversedge to Cantilever Park on Saturday, having beaten them 4-0 in the reverse fixture back in October.

McDonald expects them to be tough to break down, but insists the players must look to make home advantage count.

“I think it will be a different challenge, because last time we were playing against a team that were quite happy to sit behind the ball, so it’ll be interesting to see if they do the same again,” he admitted.

AWAY TRAVEL: South Shields

“Now they’re fighting for something like we are, so I’m sure it will be a competitive match. 

“Every game is tough in this league and anyone can beat anyone on their day, but they will come needing and wanting to get a result.

“I expect them to be a tough team to break down, so we can’t get frustrated by that and need to keep playing our football our way.

“You always look at home games as fixtures where you have the edge, and so I feel it is important for us to make the most of that and try to get maximum points at home.”
