Mark Beesley praises dogged Yellows display

Warrington Town manager Mark Beesley believes the way his side fought back to beat Liversedge is testament to their squad mentality.

The Yellows trailed with just 17 minutes on the clock but soon equalised from the penalty spot through Bohan Dixon. 

They completed the turnaround deep into the second half, thanks to a bullet header from captain Josh Amis after a delightful cross from new signing Connor Woods, and Amis’ fellow substitute Isaac Buckley-Ricketts added gloss to the scoreline in the final seconds of stoppage time. 

Speaking post-match, Beesley admitted his players were forced to dig deep to extend their club-record unbeaten run to 17 league matches.

“I think that for the first half, apart from a 5-10 minute spell, it was clear we haven’t played for a while,” he said. 

“We were sluggish and we spoke all week about not being like that. At times there’s nothing you can do – you can’t train for games. 

“They got a bit of momentum up, and I think rightfully so, they were at least level at half-time. From their point of view, they were probably disappointed not to be ahead. 

“Every game in this league is a tough, tough game, and I’ve been saying it all season. They’re in the bottom four, but after that performance you couldn’t say that – especially at half-time.”

On his side’s overall performance, Beesley added: “It wasn’t us today, but we found a way [to win] and that’s something that the top teams do.

“The three substitutes made a big difference. We’ve been banging onto the lads about how we’ve got 16/17 players and they’re all important. 

“When you don’t get on, you sometimes feel a bit not like that, but I thought the three subs came on, gave us a lift and we got a bit more of a foothold. It was a great header too for the second goal.”

Saturday’s win was the Yellows’ first competitive fixture since March 4. 

AWAY TRAVEL: South Shields

Their previous two scheduled matches against Morpeth Town and Radcliffe both fell foul of the weather, and Beesley says his players reacted well to their prolonged period without a game. 

“I think the last few weeks have been really frustrating because we had an unbelievable performance against Bamber Bridge with 10 men, and we didn’t play the week after,” he said. 

“The week after that, we gave everyone a lift signing Connor, then we didn’t play again. 

“The lads want to be out there playing, and I think they’ve relaxed a bit. They’re confident in what they do and what they’ve been doing all season.”
