Sports fan Lee Concannon is to spend the night sleeping out at Warrington Town’s Cal.Delivery Stadium to raise awareness and funds for homeless ex-servicemen and women.
Lee, who lives in Newton-le-Willows and works at Manchester Airport for Swissport, attends a few Yellows games per season, as well as following Manchester United and Warrington Wolves.
The Great Tommy Sleep Out is a nationwide campaign that runs throughout March that challenges people to spend one night, or more, outside to support veteran homelessness and raise funds for the Royal British Veterans Enterprise charity.
Thousands of ex-servicemen and women face unstable housing, mental health challenges and isolation, with fundraising helping RBVE to provide emergency accommodation, mental health support, employment and training, plus community and connection.
Lee said: “I have spent most of my life in Warrington, taking part in various events. I have a non-profit mental health group on Facebook that is aimed at providing support for people and leading people in the right direction to get help.
"I initially wanted to provide food for the homeless through this group via fundraising channels, but it became clear, due to logistics, that it would be better to support an existing campaign.
“So I decided there would be no better way to raise vital funds and awareness for veterans facing homelessness and hardship in the UK by taking part in the Great Tommy Sleep Out at Warrington Town, thanks to James and Toby for supporting and facilitating this.
“The club provides me with a safe place to complete the sleep out, while I experience some of the challenges that people on the streets face every night.”
