Josh Amis on form, fitness and Carden reunion

Warrington Town captain Josh Amis admits there was no better feeling than making an immediate impact for the club following his return from injury.

Amis, who has missed the early weeks of the season after undergoing shoulder surgery over the summer, enjoyed his first minutes of the campaign as a substitute in the Yellows’ recent 1-1 draw with Chorley, earning the stoppage-time penalty which led to Connor Woods’ last-gasp equaliser.

Last time out against Radcliffe, Amis produced yet another telling contribution from the bench, scoring the winner at the Neuven Stadium less than 20 minutes after coming on.

“It has been good to get back playing,” he said.

“People don’t quite understand how much you miss football until you can’t play for so long. I’ve been made up just being part of it again over the last few games, and then to get a goal brought back the feeling that all strikers want.”

On Saturday, Amis took the place of summer recruit Joe Rodwell-Grant, who opened his scoring account for the club in last month’s battling 1-1 draw at Scunthorpe United.

While the goals haven’t flowed freely for the former Wigan Athletic forward since joining the club, Amis has backed his team-mate to find his killer touch in front of goal.

“I’m really looking forward to working with Joe,” he added.

“We’ve been training together for a few weeks now, and he’s a really good lad. He’s great to have in the changing rooms as well.

“Joe has got a lot of talent, and I think the best is still to come from him.”

Much has changed since Amis last took to the field at home for the Yellows, with manager Paul Carden returning to the club last month following the resignation of Mark Beesley.

Number nine Amis has paid tribute to his former boss, but says the opportunity to work with Carden - who handed him his Town debut back in 2018 - is one he is really excited for.

“A lot has changed personnel-wise since I last played, and if I’m being honest, it was sad to see Bees and Dave Raven go as I really enjoyed playing under them,” Amis reflected.

“Nevertheless, I understand the nature of football, and these things happen.

“As for Cards, I loved my time under him and was really excited to see him come back to the club. I couldn’t think of a better replacement, and he is someone I’ve always stayed in contact with over the years.

“We have a great relationship, and I'm looking forward to the season ahead and helping this group push on.”
