Alex Byrne ready to keep producing the goods as Yellows seek back-to-back wins

Warrington Town summer recruit Alex Byrne is delighted with the start he has made for his new club – but he insists more is still to come.

The 26-year-old arrived at the club in the off-season from fellow BetVictor Northern Premier Division side Gainsborough Trinity, who narrowly missed out on a play-off spot last term.

In his opening two league games, Byrne has hit the ground running with five assists in two games, four of which came away at Atherton Collieries on Tuesday night.

Despite a fine opening to life at the Winner Recruitment Stadium, with https://www.casinosnz.io/, the tricky winger says he is ready to keep producing the goods as Town seek to challenge at the top end of the table.

“I set myself targets at the start of the season, like every player does,” he said. “To start off by getting five assists in my first two games; I wouldn’t say I expected it, but that is something I am capable of.

“I set myself high standards. I got 21 assists for Gainsborough, but that wasn’t enough. I want to get better; I’ve come in and got fitter than I’ve ever been to reach my targets.

“The main team goal is promotion, so if I’m hitting these targets, hopefully the team will be that little bit closer to getting promotion.”

Byrne’s arrival provides further competition on the flanks for manager Paul Carden, with Jack Mackreth, Jack Dunn and Dylan Vassallo the club’s existing wide men.

Despite starting both of Warrington’s opening two games of the season, Byrne admits that he cannot rest on his laurels and accepted that the time will come when other players get their chance.

“Like every team, you need different sort of players for different opposition,” he said. “We’re a really strong squad, but I don’t think that I’ve played at a club with so many good wingers.

“Any of us could start for any team in the league, which is quite rare, but I guess the main thing is that we all bring different attributes. It’ll be interesting going forward because we’re all competitive and all want to be playing.

“If I do take it easy, when Dylan or Dunny are back, one bad game and I could be on the bench.”

After a home defeat against newly promoted Morpeth in the opening game of the season, the Yellows did manage to get their first points of the season in midweek after a largely dominant display.

Ahead of tomorrow’s trip to former side Gainsborough, Byrne said that he was glad the squad could open their points tally sooner rather than later.

Nevertheless, he is adamant that Town face a difficult assignment if they want to achieve back-to-back wins away from home.

He said: “It’s nice to get those first points because you’re off the mark. We were disappointed to lose [against Morpeth], but we knew there were games on Tuesday, Saturday and Monday [vs Bamber Bridge].

“I think the key word is momentum. Losing is a habit and so is winning; once we get a win, we can’t dwell on it for too long.”

Discussing the prospect of facing Trinity, Byrne said: “I’ve played under Dominic Rama [Gainsborough manager] when I was there and he likes football to be played in the right areas.

“I wouldn’t expect to go there and be played off the pitch. They’ll want to put in in good areas and apply pressure on us.

“That’s something that we should be able to deal with if we want to win the league. I’d expect a good solid team with two banks of four and we just need to combat that.”
