Tony Thompson: We’ve got a squad capable of promotion

Warrington Town’s squad is well-equipped to deal with a busy run of fixtures over the next two months as the race for promotion intensifies, according to goalkeeper Tony Thompson.

Ahead of Saturday’s return to home soil against Stafford Rangers, the Yellows are nine games unbeaten in the league, winning three and drawing six of those matches.

They are currently fourth in the Northern Premier League table, although the gap between themselves and 11th-placed Guiseley is just six points.

The race to the National League North appears more eagerly-contested than ever before, but Thompson believes the quality at Mark Beesley’s disposal will serve them well over the coming weeks.

Discussing the nature of the group, he said: “I think it’s quality over quantity, to be honest.

“When you look at the individuals we’ve got in the squad, there are some massive characters and massive players.

“You don’t need a massive squad at this level. Games come thick and fast, there’s more onus on us looking after ourselves, and we’ve got the players to do that.

“We’ve got ex-professionals and lads with big careers. We know how to take care of ourselves as we approach the vital months of the season.

“Look at Matty McDonald. He’s turning himself into a massive character. He’s a quiet lad, but he does all of his talking on the pitch.

“He is an unbelievable player and he’ll only improve as he gets older.

“Then you’ve got Stefan, who didn’t come off the bench on Saturday. That says it all. We’ve got some very exciting players and that points towards a bright future for Warrington Town Football Club, especially towards the end of this season.

“Looking at the players and individuals that we’ve got in this team, there’s only one place that we can go.”

Saturday’s clash with Stafford marks the start of a busy month for the Yellows, who are set to play six fixtures during the month – four of which are at Cantilever Park.

Thompson, a virtual mainstay of the side this season, played a key role in last weekend’s hard-earned point at FC United of Manchester after a number of fine saves.

The 28-year-old says their point at Broadhurst Park now stands them in good stead.

“It’s a great place to go to,” he reflected. “The fans behind the goal are really good, and the worst thing you can do is give them a leg-up because they become a 12th man.

“I was happy to make some important saves. We’ve spoken a lot about goals conceded and shots on goal, and my saves to shot ratio hasn’t been what I’ve wanted it to be.

“To make those saves was nice and was a real confidence boost. Being in the right place to make crucial saves at crucial times is what I’m there for.”
