Report: Warrington Town 1-0 Stockport County

Matty McDonald shrugged off weekend disappointment to fire Warrington Town through to the quarter-finals of the Cheshire Senior Cup.

McDonald, sent off against Kidderminster for two late yellow cards, drove through the midfield 10 minutes from time and curled a shot past Max Metcalfe, who had earlier saved a Joe Rodwell-Grant penalty.

The Yellows had otherwise controlled large parts of the game against a youthful side from the Football League club without necessarily looking like scoring too many goals, but they found the one they needed to set up a last eight tie against Crewe Alexandra.

Early on, Stockport right-back Chima Okoligan looked dangerous and his ball across the goalmouth was cleared by Ollie Southern.

Rodwell-Grant had the Yellows’ best chances, trying to sneak a shot in at the near post that was saved by Metcalfe, who then later denied the frontman with an outstretched left leg.

The other noteworthy goalmouth action saw a cross from Murphy Bennett, whose grandfather Johnny Price is a Stockport hall of famer, hit the crossbar.

The Yellows controlled the second half and should have took the lead when Elliot Morris headed straight at Metcalfe from Jack Hont’s cross.

Moments later, Rodwell-Grant latched on to a through ball and was impeded in the box by Metcalfe, with the referee pointing to the spot and handing a yellow card to the goalkeeper.

Rodwell-Grant stepped up but saw his spot-kick saved as Metcalfe redeemed himself.

Mikey O’Neill hit the post on 71 minutes from a Hont cross and it seemed like maybe a penalty shoot-out was inevitable.

But McDonald pounced on a loose ball midway through the Stockport half with 10 to play, and opened his body up to guide a right foot shot past Metcalfe and decide the tie.

McDonald will be absent through suspension when the Yellows travel to Buxton on Saturday to face Farsley Celtic in a relegation six-pointer.
