Report: Hyde United 1-0 Warrington Town

A moment of quality from Hyde United captain Jack Redshaw sent Warrington Town out of the FA Trophy at the first hurdle.

Redshaw guided home a right-footed, curling shot from the edge of the box shortly before half-time to decide a game that otherwise the Yellows created the better chances in.

But that will be little consolation as their poor start to the season continued, as once again their inability to score cost them.

The artificial pitch had likely spared the postponement on a weather-hit Saturday, and despite the varying conditions, often swirling rain, it was an open contest.

Mark Isong, a goalscorer last time out 18 days ago, had the first real chance inside six minutes, released down the right channel by the excellent Josh Vela, though his first touch narrowed the angle to goal somewhat and his shot was fired into the side-netting.

The Yellows had named an unchanged starting 11 from that last fixture away at Prescot Cables, and Isong’s strike partner Enock Lusiama had the next chance, winning the ball back himself and then shooting from the left, parried behind at his near post by Yusuf Mersin, who was the busier of the two ‘keepers.

From the corner, Jack Doyle glanced a header wide from Reece Daly’s ball in.

Daly then won the ball back high up the pitch, and his pull-back across goal was diverted into the hands of Mersin by a defender.

It took 25 minutes for Isherwood’s first call to action, seeing a shot late from Taylor McMahon that he got down to push wide.

The resulting corner saw two further Isherwood saves, denying Lewis Rawthorn’s header and then Jake Dunwoody on the rebound.

At the other end, Isong nearly snuffed out a short back pass, colliding with Mersin on the edge of the box, but the Hyde defence got back to prevent any shots on goal.

But frustratingly for the Yellows, they went in a goal down at half time. Redshaw found space on the left, and though he seemed to be well managed, he showed quality to cut inside and measure a right-footed shot into the far corner to break the deadlock.

The Yellows lost Daly at half-time to a hamstring strain, but continued to create chances.

Matty Tweedley fired over the bar and then Lusiama forced Mersin to adjust and get down to save one-handed.

Hyde were restricted to counter attacks, one from which Isherwood had to adjust well to deny Redshaw a second, before Jordan Scanlon screwed a shot wide.

Lusiama should have done better with an opportunity created for him by Tweedley, Lewis Thompson flying in with a well-timed tackle to deny him.

But Hyde managed the final 15 minutes well, and but for a Liam Brazier shot that warmed Mersin’s hands, the Yellows couldn’t create anything clear-cut to keep them in the competition.

Tuesday’s scheduled home game against former manager Mark Beesley’s FC United of Manchester has been postponed due to their postponed FA Trophy tie against Workington being rescheduled for the same evening.
