Report: Gainsborough Trinity 2-0 Warrington Town

Warrington Town’s dismal start to the season continued as they went down 2-0 away at Gainsborough Trinity.

Goals a minute either side of half-time did for Paul Carden’s side in a game that otherwise had little goalmouth action.

Jonny Margetts curled home a free-kick from 20 yards in the final minute of the first half, but it was the second goal that was a killer, Sisi Tuntulwana firing home within two minutes of the restart as the Yellows were hit on the counter-attack.

It was the fourth goal the Yellows have conceded already this season within two minutes of the start of the second half, and they never looked like getting back in to it.

Before the goal, the only action of note in the first half saw goalkeeper Liam Isherwood fall foul of the new eight second rule for goalkeepers, the referee deciding he spent too long with ball in hand and instead awarded a Gainsborough corner.

The Yellows had three corners of their own in the first half, but poor delivery meant they couldn’t make anything from them.

Matty Waters sold debutant centre-back Aaron Pickles short with a pass before half time, and he was penalised for tugging at the shirt of Javelle Clarke, enabling Margetts to step up and beat Isherwood to his left.

No doubt aware of their vulnerability after half-time, the Yellows had started positively winning an early corner but were hit on a devastating counter-attack. It looked to have broken down when a pass fell behind Margetts, but Tuntulwana was found in space on the right hand side of the box and he fired across Isherwood for 2-0.

Carden handed debuts to new signings Jonas Mukuna and Mark Isong off the bench, and though fellow substitute Dontai Gabidon had a few lively moments, nothing was really created in the way of a chance.

The Yellows have now won just three of their last 39 league matches and face fellow relegated side Rushall Olympic at home on Tuesday night.
