Mark Beesley: We must keep believing

Warrington Town boss Mark Beesley says his Yellows squad must keep believing after they fell to a disappointing 1-0 defeat at home to FC United of Manchester.

The visitors were indebted to debutant goalkeeper Wyll Stanway, who made a series of top-class saves to earn his side all three points.

Saturday’s result saw the Yellows drop to 13th in the Northern Premier League table. 

Speaking post-match, Beesley was left to rue the heroics of Stanway as Town were kept scoreless at Cantilever Park. 

However, he is confident that his squad is capable of turning things around.

“Everyone who came to this ground today has seen a great display of goalkeeping, and sometimes that happens,” he admitted.

“He’s made three or four world-class saves, and sometimes it’s not meant to be. 

“We’ve got to keep believing. I thought the first half was a bit of a non-event; we didn’t impose ourselves and they had a bit more control of the game.

“I thought we needed to make a change [at half-time], and it made a difference. There was only one team in it in the second half, but we gave a really poor goal away.

“I don’t think that Tony Thompson has had a save to make in the whole game, but we’ve just got to keep going. 

“We’ve got good players, good forwards and hopefully our luck will turn a little bit.”

One positive on Saturday afternoon was the impact of half-time substitute Josh Amis, who provided the Yellows with a focal point in attack and linked up well with the ever-lively Isaac Buckley-Ricketts. 

After recovering from a bout of septic tonsillitis, Beesley hopes that Amis’ return to full fitness will increase their threat in the final third.

“I felt that the ball kept coming back too much [in the first half],” he said. “Isaac, in the channel, would get opportunities, and that proved to be the case.

“Josh got hold of the ball for us and gave us a bit of a platform.

“We’ve had our first two number 9s out all season. Josh is just coming back now, and Jordan, we don’t know when he will be back. 

“I said to [Isaac], ‘keep going, you’re hitting the target and making keepers make brilliant saves’.

“I’m sure that with a lesser keeper, he’d have scored two or three today.”
