Macormac: We’ll dust ourselves off

Warrington Town chairman Toby Macormac says they will have to dust themselves off and go again after their super play-off final heartbreak last weekend.

After playing 54 games over a long season, it came down to extra time in the final game, a play-off against Southern League Central side King’s Lynn Town, to settle its outcome – unfortunately the wrong one for Warrington.

It means they will once again line-up in the Northern Premier League next season, with relegated clubs FC United and Ashton amongst those joining an already competitive league, with the likes of South Shields, Scarborough, Gainsborough and Basford all expected to challenge according to the sports betting odds.

Macormac said: “It’s a missed opportunity and everyone’s said it’s been a missed opportunity.

“It was a big opportunity in front of a big crowd and we’ve drummed up some really serious following over the last few weeks and it wasn’t that there was an expectation we were going to go up, but everyone thought we were going to do it.

“Unfortunately we’ve not, so we’ve got to dust ourselves down and have a couple of weeks off and then get back to it.

“It’s going to be a tough season again next year, so we know what we’re up against but we’ve just got to go again.”

Macormac may well have a fight on his hands to not only retain several players, but highly-rated manager Paul Carden, who has led the Yellows to successive third place finishes despite the reduction in his budget last term.

They’re likely to find the going even tougher in 2019/20, with South Shields likely to push hard for the title after their play-off final disappointment at home to the Yellows.

Basford United have already indicated they will spend big for promotion, while Ashton United and Scarborough will have sizeable budgets.

The chairman added: “Paul is one of the best signings I’ve ever made here at the club.

“I’ve no doubt clubs will come in for him. But we’ve done some great things in the last couple of seasons.

“I’ll sit down with Paul this week. I have expectations myself. He’ll want to keep players and some of our players who have been outstanding this year are going to want a justified wage rise.

“I need to look at our position really. There are some big teams that will be strong next season, and if you’re looking at it right now you’re looking at getting fifth and trying to get in the play-offs again.

“That’s because of what you’re up against, the financial pressures you’re up against not only against the opposition, but your own club as well.”
