Beesley praises Yellows’ spirit after Banbury United victory

Warrington Town manager Mark Beesley is delighted with how his side bounced back to claim a 2-1 win over Banbury United on Saturday.

The Yellows fell to an early goal after Craig Hewitt’s volley found the back of the net after 20 minutes, but it was a wake-up call for Beesley’s side who quickly hit back through a wonderful volley from Jay Harris 17 minutes later.

From then on, the home side piled the pressure on the visitors, and despite chance after chance, it seemed as though it was going to be a frustrating afternoon for the Yellows until a beautifully placed in-swinger from Mitch Duggan found Josh Amis in the box who guided a header home with under 10 minutes to go, clinching a valuable three points for his side.

Speaking post-match, Beesley believes that his side was well worthy of the victory after the opening 20-minute period.

“It was a pleasing performance,” he said.

“Their goal after the first 20 minutes probably gave us a bloody nose and it sparked us into life and sometimes that happens.

“It was blowing a gale, we couldn’t get a foothold in the game and then when something like that happens, you roll your sleeves up and start to get going.

“From then on, I thought that we were dominant – we didn’t want half-time [to come]. We were right in the ascendancy, putting them under pressure and creating chances.

“In the second half, we were probably helped by the wind, it allowed us to get the ball in behind and we managed to cause them problems out wide.

“We created chances and hit the post – I didn’t think that it [second goal] was coming but the lads kept going and it was a fitting winner with a great header.”

Mark Beesley was full of praise for Josh Amis who picked up his 5th goal of the season with his game-winning header.

The Yellows’ captain has renewed his attacking threat after recovering from an injury which kept him unavailable for the first 13 fixtures this season and Beesley couldn’t be happier with his number nine.

“Josh Amis embodies the spirit of this club,” he said.

“He’s been my captain ever since I took charge and that’s because he gives everything for us and for the shirt.

“He just keeps going and keeps putting his hand up. At times, I need to take him out of the firing line because of the way he plays – he gets targeted and he doesn’t get the decisions he deserves.

“He’s an outstanding player, first and foremost. He’s got a good touch, and scores some great goals – he’s been a talisman for us for a long time.

“We just need to make sure that we can get a full season out of him because you know that you’re going to get goals with Josh Amis.”
