Yellows knocked out of FA Cup

The magic of the FA Cup continued for Marine after they coasted past Warrington Town 3-0 on Saturday afternoon.

After reaching the FA Cup third round and playing Tottenham Hotspur last season, the Crosby side will have designs on going as close as possible to replicating that and they made light work of a disappointing Yellows display at the Marine Travel Arena.

The damage was done inside 90 first half seconds, Owen Watkinson breaking the deadlock on 35 minutes and then virtually from the kick-off, Neil Kengni doubled the home side’s advantage.

Kengni killed the game as a contest on the hour mark, firing left-footed across Dan Atherton as Paul Carden’s side succumbed to a team from the level below.

The Yellows had won on their last two trips to Marine and hadn’t conceded a goal in the last four matches against them.

In an ordinary first half, Atherton had to scramble back to tip over a Doyle free-kick that almost caught him out and at the other end, Bayleigh Passant dived to his left to stop a Mitch Duggan header and then denied Shaun Miller a chance after a headed back-pass fell short.

The opening goal came from nothing, a clearance by Mark Roberts stopping unfortunately in the path of Watkinson, who fired across Atherton and in off the inside of the post.

The manner of the second goal will have disappointed Carden, a simple headed clearance finding its way to Kengni to race on and he clinicially finished left-footed across the ‘keeper to leave the Yellows shellshocked.

Josh Amis was thrown on at half-time to try and help the Yellows back in to the game, but apart from a Jordan Buckley header off their first corner of the game, they never really got close before Kengni made the game safe latching on to a ball over the top to fire home.

Debutant Matthew McDonald had the Yellows’ best chance, his shot from the edge pushed away by Passant, in a day to forget for the visitors.

Warrington are next in action on Saturday away at South Shields, who themselves were beaten 3-0 by lower league opposition in the FA Cup today.
