Yellows boss Mark Beesley previews Easter double-header

Mark Beesley hopes Warrington Town’s squad depth will be an advantage as the Yellows prepare for two crucial games in the space of three days.

As the fight for a Pitching In Northern Premier League play-off spot intensifies, Town will visit Atherton Collieries on Saturday before welcoming Cheshire rivals Witton Albion to Cantilever Park two days later.

With three games remaining in the regular season, a huge six points is on offer for the Yellows, who currently sit fourth in the league table, three points ahead of sixth-placed Bamber Bridge and with a vastly superior goal difference over most of the sides below them.

First up, Saturday’s trip to the Skuna Stadium sees them face an Atherton side without a win in their last four home games.

Colls also hold a mixed record at both ends of the pitch. Brad Cooke’s side are the second-lowest scorers in the division, but do boast the fifth-strongest defence, shipping just 41 goals in 39 games.

48 hours later, Beesley and his squad will look to end a run of three home games without a win, against a Witton side fighting for their lives at the bottom of the table. Monday’s opponents were struggling for form in recent weeks but have recorded back-to-back victories in their bid to avoid relegation.

Nevertheless, the Easter double-header offers a real chance for the Yellows to all-but-secure a play-off place heading into the final game of the season; a trip to Matlock Town on Saturday 23 April.

Speaking after the club’s recent 1-1 draw with Stafford Rangers, Beesley was asked for his thoughts on the challenges ahead.

“I think it’s important that everybody’s ready for two games in three days,” he said. “We’ve got a good squad and we’ve got to make sure we use everybody at the right time.

“They’re two different types of games; you’ve got a home game, and as you say, we haven’t been great at home of late.

“Both teams don’t give much away and don’t concede many goals. We’ve got to be at our best next weekend, starting with Atherton on Saturday.”
