Tony Thompson: Recent momentum will spur us on

Goalkeeper Tony Thompson has urged Warrington Town’s squad to let their team spirit fuel their momentum after they recorded back-to-back Northern Premier League victories in midweek. 

Connor Woods’ first-half goal was enough to secure three points for the Yellows at Lancaster City on Tuesday night. 

Thompson, 27, made some crucial saves during the match, preventing the Dolly Blues from staging a fightback on home soil.

Reflecting on their midweek triumph, Thompson said: “It might be one of the hardest games we’ve played all season.

“It was nitty-gritty and backs-to-the-wall a little bit, but we controlled the game and I didn’t feel like they were going to score at any point.

“The togetherness in the group has been there all season, but we haven’t been pressured like that in midweek. It’s shown how together we are, and how strong we can be.”

Town currently sit fifth in the Northern Premier League, and a win on Saturday against Matlock Town could see them climb to within one point of top spot, depending on other results.

Thompson hopes his side can begin to forget about the inconsistency which hampered them in the early weeks of the season, taking some pressure off as they look to continue their quest for promotion. 

“Football is a fickle game,” he admitted. “Two weeks ago the gaffer was getting questioned, and now we can make it three wins in three, which would be massive.

“It’s crazy, but that’s the game we play.

“I really want it [a hat-trick of victories] for Bees, and I really want it for the lads as well. It will take a lot of pressure off everyone in the club.

“Expectations are high as well, so we’re really gunning for it.”

The Yellows’ next opponents, Matlock Town, currently sit second in the division, having picked up 24 points from their opening 15 league games. 

Despite the Gladiators’ solid start to the season, Thompson admits the squad are focusing on their own performances, given the unpredictable nature of the league.

“We’re just concentrating on ourselves now, and controlling the controllables,” he said. 

“I see that Matlock are on a good run, but so are we. As I’ve said all season, the performances have been there, but now it’s time to match them with the results as well.

“Teams will be looking at us now and seeing that we’re a massive threat.”
