Sean Williams: Promotion was for the fans

Warrington Town midfielder Sean Williams says it felt great to give something back to the fans after sealing promotion to the National League North.

The Yellows confirmed their place in the league above thanks to a dramatic 1-0 win over Bamber Bridge in the Northern Premier League play-off final last week.

It had been the Yellows’ third straight final. They won the Northern Premier league play-offs in 2018/19, but missed out on promotion after losing to Kings Lynn Town in a one-off ‘Super Play-Off’, before being narrowly beaten last year at Scarborough Athletic.

WIlliams says their ability to get over the line this time around is a testament to the hard work put in behind the scenes.

He also expressed his delight at being able to take the club’s supporters on an exciting new adventure next season. 

“We’ve been unlucky in the past not to get promoted, so it’s probably been a long time coming,” he said.

“The fans have never shied away, and have never lacked belief in us. It was great to give them something back because they absolutely deserve it. 

“I’m proud that we were able to give them what they wanted, and to say a thank you personally to lots of them after the match.

“The hard work that goes on behind the scenes, from Toby and Lisa to their children and the coaching staff – it’s helped make this club ready to step up, and I’m glad that we’ve managed to repay the hard work they’ve put into this club over the years.”

While Williams admitted he was disappointed not to start against Bamber Bridge, he said he was pleased with the contribution he was able to make upon his introduction midway through the second half.

He came on for Matty McDonald with just under 25 minutes to go, and was praised for his composure in the midfield area by manager Mark Beesley after the game.

“I was a little disappointed not to start the game but happy that I made a bit of an impact when I did come on,” Williams added. 

“The main thing was that the lads managed to get themselves over the line. I thought they were great on the day. 

“We’ve got a changing room of winners – lads who have been part of promotion-winning teams in the past, combined with young lads who are hungry to get promoted and win things. Hopefully it’ll be the first of many for some of those players.

“When you put enough winners together, you’re going to get the right results.”
