Report: Wigan Athletic Women 1-2 Warrington Town Women

Katie Donohue’s penalty save and goals from Jess Carberry and Sam Hassall earned the Yellows Women three vital points in Wigan.

Warrington came into the game off the back of a 6-0 cup defeat in Crewe the week prior, a loss with a final score that did not reflect the women’s efforts; unlike their league clash at Brocstedes Park.

Town capitalised on the opportunities they had in attack and maintained their defensive shape well throughout the game resulting in the hosts having very few big chances.

An early breakthrough from Jess Carberry lifted the women’s spirits just 6 minutes into the game.

She received a long ball from skipper Helen Dobson, and a lovely first touch allowed her to take the ball towards the net and strike it from the edge of the box: Latics goalie Erin Hathorn had no chance in stopping the wonder strike from the Yellows winger.

The visitors then doubled their lead from a neat set piece; Savage whipped a perfect corner ball into the box and found Chloe Green near the goalmouth who hit it towards the net and let Sam Hassall do the rest with an easy tap-in on the line.

Latics winger Charlotte Bagshaw had a couple of shots on goal early in the game after breaking past the Yellows’ back line, but goalkeeper Katie Donohue was there to deny both efforts.

Club veteran Nicola Chatterley made her season debut for the Yellows after previously being out for 11 months due to an Achilles injury. She received massive cheers from the travelling Town fans when she was substituted on at half time.

Wigan made a big push in the second half but still struggled to breach the Yellows’ defence.

The hosts did have some fortune when the referee pointed to the penalty spot when Emily Melvin went down in the box - she took her own penalty but Donohue was there again to deny the hosts from getting on the scoreboard.

The Latics did however find the back of the net in the last 10 minutes through Casey Green who gave the hosts some hope of finding an equaliser, but the Yellows stood strong and managed the clock well, earning them a huge three points.

Town next travel to Liverpool to face off with 3rd place Mossley Hill in what will be another challenging encounter for the Yellows Women, who sit in the relegation zone just 2 points away from safety.
