Report: Warrington Town Women 2-4 Wirral Phoenix

The Yellows welcomed the Phoenix to Tetley Walkers, the second home outing against a Merseyside club in two weeks.

Results had not been going Warrington’s way over the past few weeks, but they looked to turn that around against newly-promoted Wirral, who have had a decent start in their new league.

Town had a brilliant opening 15 minutes and bagged a goal through Jess Carberry in the 11th minute.

Wirral went on to score three of their own, two of which came from errors in possession from the Yellows.

Talia Morrison equalised in the 17th minute, Evie Jowett fired Phoenix into the lead in the 25th minute, then Sarah Buckley extended the lead in the 45th minute.

A goal from Chloe Green in stoppage time reduced the deficit and gave Town some hope heading into the half-time intermission.

Talia Morrison bagged her second goal of the game in the 54th minute after another error in possession from the Yellows gave Wirral a two-goal lead again.

The Yellows worked the ball up the pitch well but frequently lost it in the final third, and no dangerous chances came for the hosts.

Phoenix themselves didn’t generate much offence all game, but sloppy play from Town gifted the visitors three goals in the match.

In the end, it was the Phoenix who headed back to Wirral with all 3 points, and yet another defeat was pinned on the board for Warrington.

The Yellows will look to turn things around next week as they travel to Ellesmere Port and face Vauxhall Motors in the Cheshire FA County Cup.
