Warrington Town fought back in vain as they lost out to the odd goal in five at home to Darlington.
Devarn Green’s 20-yard effort with 10 to play reduced the arrears to 3-2 but they couldn’t find the equaliser that their efforts deserved, having created many of the chances in the match.
A lovely goal by Will McGowan, left-footed from the edge of the box into the top corner, put the visitors in front on 21 minutes, in what was a fairly even first half.
Joe Rodwell-Grant was a threat for the Yellows down the right, and he had a couple of chances, one of them well pushed wide by Pete Jameson.
Lee Williams and Peter Clarke both had shots go over the bar before Darlington doubled their lead, when hesitation on the edge of the box allowed Cedric Main to get in and he drove a shot low past Dan Atherton.
Trailing 2-0 was harsh on the home side, but they went into half-time with some hope, youngster Lee Williams heading home from Green’s pinpoint cross.
Warrington were the better team in the opening exchanges of the second half, and only a superb tackle by Toby Lees denied Williams a second goal.
Rodwell-Grant forced another save from Jameson, but in a fashion perhaps typical of the Yellows’ season, despite having done all the running, they fell further behind on the hour mark.
Caden Kelly’s corner was chested down by Louis Storey and he got away a scruffy shot that bobbled its way into the corner.
Substitute Josh Amis hit the post before Green got the Yellows back within a goal, but they couldn’t find an equaliser and confirmation of their relegation looms ever closer.
