Report: Warrington Town 2-1 Chorley

Warrington Town made it three successive wins in the National League North with a superb 2-1 win at home to Chorley.

Connor Woods and Isaac Buckley-Ricketts both scored well-taken late goals to move the Yellows within a point of the play-off places.

They had stayed patient for their chances, Buckley-Ricketts hitting the bar in the first half, and Chorley grew in to what was a finely poised and entertaining game even at 0-0.

Buckley-Ricketts got on the end of a Bohan Dixon ball forward and lobbed over debutant ‘keeper Max Dearnley, only to see the ball bounce back off the crossbar.

Chorley had chances of their own in the first half, Carlton Ubaezuonu missing the ball in the goalmouth from Mark Ellis’ nod down.

Ubaezuonu was then released in the middle of the box by Mike Calveley, with Dan Atherton rushing off his line to save the shot.

Buckley-Ricketts had two shots fly wide, one after a lovely dummy by Matty McDonald, and the score remained goalless at the break.

Atherton was called in to early second half action, beating away a shot from Frankie Maguire as Chorley enjoyed their best spell of the game.

The deadlock was broken in the 79th minute when Woods showed strength to beat Harvey Smith to Dixon’s ball round the corner, and he picked his spot, curling a right-footed shot in to the top corner from the edge of the box.

The lead was doubled five minutes later when Woods released Buckley-Ricketts who raced through on goal and kept his cool to round the ‘keeper and slot home for his 11th goal of the season.

Chorley gave themselves late hope when substitute Oliver Shenton swept home with three minutes left of normal time but the hosts held on to complete the double over their opponents this season.
