Report: Warrington Town 2-1 Bishop’s Stortford

Warrington Town came from behind to see off basement boys Bishop’s Stortford 2-1 at Cantilever Park.

Isaac Buckley-Ricketts continued his fine goalscoring form with the equaliser after defender Mark Haines had lashed the visitors in to a second half lead.

Substitute Matt Grivosti struck the winner within seconds of coming off the bench, tapping home from three yards after Jack Giddens had saved to deny Josh Amis.

For a spell, it looked like it could turn in to a frustrating wet afternoon for the Yellows, who started with Evan Gumbs at the back in the absence of Tom Hannigan.

They had the first chance inside eight minutes, ‘keeper Dan Atherton launching a counter attack from a corner which resulted in Connor Woods’ deflected shot hitting the side netting.

Giddens saved well to deny Matty McDonald moments later, but that would turn out to be the last clear chance right until the stroke of half-time, when Buckley-Ricketts fizzed a shot just wide.

Bishop’s Stortford grew in confidence at the start of the second half and only a superb diving tackle by Evan Gumbs prevented an opening for Aaron Greene.

They did take the lead on 57 minutes, Darren Foxley’s corner only half cleared at the near post, falling for defender Haines who lashed it in to the back of the net from 12 yards.

Kane Crichlow then forced a save from Atherton as the Yellows wobbled having fallen behind.

But within 10 minutes of falling behind, they were level.

Woods dug out a cross for Josh Amis, who hooked a shot over his head that was well saved by a scrambling Giddens.

From the corner, Buckley-Ricketts caught the visitors napping, taking it short and then hammering a shot home at the near post for his 15th goal of the season.

A triple substitution soon followed and one of those new faces, Grivosti, could barely believe his luck when the ball fell to him when Giddens saved to stop Amis’ shot, after the striker had taken in a cross by Buckley-Ricketts.

That knocked the stuffing out of the visitors, and it could have been three when Woods was released through the middle only to be denied by a last ditch tackle by Lordan Akelbire.
