Report: Warrington Town 2-0 Lancaster City

Warrington Town moved up to third in the Northern Premier League with their second 2-0 home win in four days.

Tom Hannigan and Jordan Buckley were the scorers as the Yellows brushed aside Lancaster City to go 11 games unbeaten, and follow up Saturday’s victory over Stafford Rangers with another clean sheet.

It was as routine a victory as they come for the home side after Hannigan headed them in front on the stroke of half time.

A high tempo start to the second half was rewarded when Buckley prodded home from Sean Williams’ teasing cross from the right in the 54th minute and the Dolly Blues had no response.

Mark Beesley made two changes to the side that won at the weekend, with Luke Duffy and Declan Walker coming in for Josh Amis and the injured Andy White.

Bohan Dixon cracked the crossbar with a long range attempt early on and Dec Walker curled a free-kick just wide.

The rest of the first half turned in to a bit of a stalemate though the Yellows started to enjoy more of the ball and more territory, eventually making it pay when Williams’ cross was met by the head of Hannigan. He guided it home to the top corner for his second goal in as many games.

The Yellows dominated the opening minutes of the second half and Buckley almost made it two when he took advantage of a defensive mix up and only the leg of Sam Waller denied him a goal.

Sustained pressure paid off when after they had nearly executed a superb one-two on the edge of the box, Williams and Buckley linked up when the former’s teasing cross was diverted home by last season’s top goal scorer.

As was the case on Saturday, the second goal virtually ended the game as a contest. A third nearly followed moments later when Waller was at full stretch to deny Dixon.

The Yellows are next in action away at Matlock Town on Saturday.
