Report: Warrington Town 0-2 Southport

A change of competition couldn’t bring a change of fortune for Warrington Town as they were beaten 2-0 by Southport in the Liverpool Senior Cup.

Goals in either half from Dior Angus and David Morgan meant the Yellows’ return to the competition for the first time in 14 years ended in defeat.

They did have the better chances, goalkeeper Chris Renshaw making three excellent saves, two to deny Josh Amis and one to block Hamish Douglas from close range.

One of the Amis chances came when the Yellows captain should have had a penalty after blatantly being pulled back as he tried to get to the loose ball he subsequently stretched to poke goalwards, and that frustration heightened when moments later Southport doubled their lead through Morgan’s poke in to the top corner.

Angus hit the post in the first half moments before he opened the scoring, finding the roof of the net from eight yards out on the half hour mark.

But it was an otherwise even game between two sides not at full strength, the Yellows handing a debut to Elliot Morris, a new signing from City of Liverpool.

Morris looked lively in the opening half hour, though was forced off with a niggle midway through the second half.

Paul Carden will have been pleased with the performance of Dana Amaral, who played the full 90 minutes, having only featured for a couple of minutes as a substitute since he became Carden’s first signing since his return to the club.

The two sides meet again on Saturday, this time at Haig Avenue, in the FA Trophy.
