Report: Warrington Town 0-1 Peterborough Sports

A scrappy second half goal was enough to end Warrington Town’s six-game unbeaten run as they went down 1-0 at home to Peterborough Sports.

Hayden Cann poked home a loose ball from a corner four minutes after half time and, unlike against Farsley in midweek, the Yellows couldn’t find a way back in to the game.

It was a difficult and disappointing afternoon against a visiting Peterborough side who had won two and drawn one of their previous three games.

The first half was very much a stalemate after Josh McCammon’s shot inside two minutes was beaten away by Dan Atherton, with the Yellows’ only sights goal coming when Isaac Buckley-Ricketts was denied by Peter Crook from a tight angle and then when Bohan Dixon’s stooping header was cleared off the line from a corner.

A warning shot was fired across Atherton by Ben Fowkes early in the second half at the expense of a corner, from which Peterborough scored the decisive goal. Dan Jarvis’ deep cross was headed across goal and saved by Atherton, but Cann was quickest to react to divert the ball in to the back of the net for 1-0.

It was nearly two on 68 minutes, when Mitch Duggan was forced to head off his own line as the Yellows waited for a whistle for a foul that never came, and Peterborough looked relatively comfortable.

Three successive Sean Williams corners failed to create a clear cut chance, and at the other end, Atherton had to be off his line quick to deny Michael Gash.

Whereas on Tuesday night in the draw against Farsley, the Yellows were able to build pressure and create chances in the final stages and eventually force an equaliser, they were found wanting on this occasion and fell to a third home defeat of the season.
