Report: Warrington Town 0-0 Southport

Warrington Town played out a goalless draw with Southport in their final home game in the National League North.

Neither side did enough to win a typical end-of-season game, though the best chance fell to Yellows striker Lee Williams midway through the second half, but he couldn’t quite do enough to put home the loose ball.

The draw at least ended the Yellows’ eight-game losing streak and they are now guaranteed to finish 23rd in the table after a disappointing campaign.

There weren’t many chances in the first half, Daniel Philliskirk firing over the bar after intercepting a loose Mikey O’Neill pass and Sonny Hilton’s shot through bodies from the edge was comfortably saved by Dan Atherton.

A sloppy clearance by Southport’s keeper Chris Renshaw landed at the feet of Sam Gill 40-yards out, but he couldn’t get enough height on his long-range effort to the beat the ‘keeper as he scrambled back.

If Southport had the better of the first half, the Yellows had the better of the second half and they had a 10-minute spell in the middle of the half where they had a flurry of chances.

Before that, O’Neill had screwed a shot wide against his former club.

The spell started when Jay Harris’ cross was cleared to Bohan Dixon, who chested down and fired a left-foot half-volley just wide of Renshaw’s left-hand post.

Then Aaron James, playing on the right of midfield, kept the ball alive and found Dixon, whose shot was fumbled by Renshaw it appeared to the feet of Williams, who couldn’t quite dig the ball out to find the net.

Another Harris cross created a half chance for Williams and O’Neill, with Renshaw alert to punch behind.

At the other end, a quick free-kick by Southport almost caught the Yellows out, Atherton alive to the threat to snuff out substitute Daniel Lloyd.

Warrington Town finish their campaign with a trip to play-off chasing Buxton on Saturday.
