Report: Prescot Cables 0-2 Warrington Town

Warrington Town kicked off their 2023/24 pre-season campaign with a comfortable 2-0 victory at Prescot Cables.

Town wrapped up the win at the Joseph Russell Stadium thanks to goals in either half from Andy White and Matty McDonald.

The fixture – one of eight that Mark Beesley’s side will face before the upcoming National League North season – saw a number of new faces on show, alongside many of the squad that helped secure promotion from the Northern Premier League.

The Yellows started on the front foot, with Josh Amis firing wide with their first real opportunity inside the opening quarter.

Not long after, the deadlock was broken, with Amis heavily involved again. The powerful forward held the ball up well after Matty Grivosti’s cross before laying it back to White, who entered the box before arrowing a shot into the far corner.

There were chances to extend the lead before half-time, with Bohan Dixon denied by both a fine save and the width of the post, before Amis found himself free again but could only divert a low cross from the left just wide.

The second half saw a number of changes of personnel, but it didn’t stop Town dictating the tempo against a hard-working Cables side two leagues below in the football pyramid.

McDonald, one of those players introduced at the break, capped off a fine 45-minute cameo with a lovely solo goal, driving forward from midway inside the Cables half before finding the bottom left corner with a low shot.

More chances came as the game wore on, only for the hosts’ goalkeeper to save a dipping long-range effort from Trialist C before diving to his right to beat away Isaac Buckley-Ricketts’ goal-bound effort in the closing stages.

Next up for the Yellows is a home game against City of Liverpool on Saturday 8 July.
