Warrington Town scored twice in a league game for the first time since October, but it still wasn’t enough to earn them any points on a Tuesday night trip to Hereford.
Lee Williams and Mo Doro both bagged their first goals for the club as the Yellows came from behind to lead 2-1 in a first half that saw the two sides share four goals to mark Paul Carden’s 250th game in charge.
Jaiden White, who opened the scoring on five minutes, would ultimately strike the winning goal six minutes into the second half to deny the Yellows a share of the spoils that perhaps their efforts deserved.
When White cut in from the right and curled home a left-footed opener inside five minutes, the 32 die-hard travelling fans could have been forgiven for expecting a long evening.
But it turned in to an entertaining and competitive game that swung both ways in the first half, and by the 14th minute, the Yellows had equalised. Jay Harris and Bohan Dixon opened up the Hereford midfield to find Elliot Morris, and his cross
from the right was flicked home with his trailing leg by on loan Stockport teenager Williams.
Playing as a lone striker, Williams put in a good shift and almost capitalised on a poor touch by Hereford ‘keeper Theo Richardson on the half hour mark.
You have to go back to October to find the last league game the Yellows scored twice in, but they ended that run on 37 minutes when Matty McDonald laid the ball off for Doro, who struck a left-footed shot into the net off the inside of the far
post.
Unfortunately, the lead only lasted three minutes, a teasing cross from the left by Yusifu Ceesay was poked home at the back post by Remaye Campbell to make it 2-2 at half-time.
What difference going in to the break with a lead would have made we will never know, and the Yellows started the second half sluggishly, Tate Campbell firing an early warning shot that was saved by Atherton.
A seemingly unsighted Atherton couldn’t keep out White’s shot on 51 minutes, a similar left-foot curling effort to his first goal, albeit this time further out and a bit more central.
Atherton did keep the visitors in the game with saves from Remaye Campbell and a first class stop to deny Jason Cowley as Hereford pressed to put the game to bed.
But the Yellows wouldn’t go away, and forced some chances of their own, Williams not getting enough power on a shot to trouble Richardson after being found by Doro in the box.
Hereford frustrated the visitors in the closing stages, and it was only deep into injury-time that the Yellows managed to find a ball in to the box, McDonald, on his 100th appearance for the club, denied by a block by Sammy Robinson on the line.
Attention now turns to back-to-back, must-win home games for Warrington Town, against Chorley and Scarborough Athletic.
