Preview: Warrington Town vs Southport

Warrington Town will prepare for a third successive National League North home game, weather permitting, as Southport make the short trip to Cantilever Park on Saturday.

A win could see the Yellows climb back into the top half of the division, and they come into this weekend’s game spurred on by a late comeback which saw them come from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Alfreton Town last time out.

The two sides are separated by six points in the table, and Mark Beesley’s squad will be hoping to complete a league double over the Sandgrounders after their memorable 4-0 win at Haig Avenue on the opening weekend of the season.

Below, we’ve compiled everything you need to know ahead of the fixture.

PLEASE NOTE: There will be a 10am pitch inspection ahead of the game. The outcome of this inspection will be shared across our social media channels

Town will be without defender Mitch Duggan, who begins a three-match suspension for the red card picked up against Tamworth last week.

Captain Josh Amis and midfielder Jay Harris could come back into the mix, while Matty McDonald is also pushing to start.

Saturday is expected to come too soon for 2022/23 Player of the Year Evan Gumbs as he continues his comeback from a long-term hernia injury.

Mark Beesley preview

Warrington Town manager Mark Beesley says his side are expecting a far different Southport side to the one beaten handsomely by the Yellows on the opening weekend of the season.

Now under the guidance of new management, they recovered from a difficult start to the campaign and now sit 19th in the National League North, five points above the relegation zone.

“When you get promoted to this league, you look at these games against the local teams,” Beesley said.

“They’ll bring good support, they’ve got a good manager and some good players, so it will be a really difficult game for us.

“It’s another home game, so we’re hoping we’ll get a big crowd to get behind us, as they always do.”
