Preview: Warrington Town vs South Shields

Warrington Town are in cup action for the second time in the space of a week on Saturday afternoon as South Shields visit Cantilever Park in the first round of the FA Trophy.

The Yellows were knocked out of the Cheshire Senior Cup by Stalybridge Celtic in midweek, and will be keen to bounce back against the only full-time team currently competing in the Northern Premier League.

The two are notorious rivals, with Town beating the team from the north-east in the play-offs in each of the past two completed Northern Premier League seasons.

Mark Beesley’s side booked their place at this stage of the competition with a hard-fought 2-1 victory at Hebburn Town in the last round, while Shields won 2-1 at Stalybridge.

Captain Josh Amis and defender Teddy Mfuni have both been cleared to play, despite picking up red cards in midweek.

However, Mitch Duggan will begin a three-match ban this weekend for the sending-off he received in the 1-0 win at Lancaster City last week.

Isaac Buckley-Ricketts has returned to training, and although this weekend comes too soon for him, he could be in contention to feature in our next league game against Guiseley on Saturday 5 November.

Striker Jordan Buckley (ankle) remains sidelined, while Mikey Horward will miss the rest of the season with an ACL injury.

Ahead of Saturday’s clash with South Shields, Dec Walker admits the strength of the visiting squad is there for all to see, but believes he and his Yellows team-mates are more than capable of securing victory.

“It’s a ‘nothing to lose’ game,” he said. “We just need to keep our momentum going.

“It’s probably the toughest draw we could’ve had at this stage so far. But we’ve beaten them before, so there’s no reason not to beat them again.”
