Preview: Warrington Town vs Morpeth Town

Warrington Town begin their 2022/23 Pitching In NPL Premier Division campaign at home to Morpeth Town this Saturday.

Mark Beesley’s side enter the new season on a six-game unbeaten run after an impressive pre-season campaign.

However, Saturday sees them face a Morpeth side that have shone since the appointment of current boss Craig Lynch.

Having recovered from being bottom of the division in mid-September to achieving a comfortable top half finish, the Highwaymen will be hoping to put themselves in the play-off mix this season.

Previous meetings

The sides met three times last season in league and cup, with both Northern Premier League encounters going the way of the home side.

February saw the Yellows capitalise on a red card for Morpeth goalkeeper Dan Lawson to win 3-1, with new club captain Josh Amis bagging a double and Sean Williams scoring from the penalty spot.

However, it was the Highwaymen who triumphed in our previous encounter, as goals from Ben Ramsey and Liam Henderson sealed a 2-0 victory at Craik Park back in March.

Evan Gumbs preview

Supporters can expect a fitter, more ambitious Warrington Town side during the 2022/23 season, says Yellows defender Evan Gumbs.

In Mark Beesley’s first full pre-season at the helm, a real emphasis has been placed on defenders playing out from the back.

“We’ve worked a lot on it, since the first day of coming back in for pre-season,” Gumbs said.

“The lads have been picking it up well. You can see all of the hard work coming off, and hopefully we can keep improving as the season goes on.”
