Preview: Warrington Town v Whitby Town

Warrington Town are in action at the Cantilever Park this weekend in the BetVictor Northern Premier Division against Whitby Town.

FORM GUIDE

The Yellows head into the weekend following a late 2-2 draw with Stafford Rangers, while sitting in the play-offs.

Josh Amis returned from injury to score his third goal of the season in injury time to secure a point away to Stafford.

Warrington are also set to face 1874 Northwich in the Cheshire Senior Cup quarter-finals on Tuesday, February 4, at Cantilever Park following the 4-1 victory over Sandbach United.

Paul Carden also boosted the squad this week, extending the loan signing of Scott Brown from Harrogate Town until the end of the season. He has been ever present since joining the club, starting in all five games in the BetVictor Northern Premier Division.

Whitby currently sit 13th in the league table, are have picked up 10 points out of a possible 15 in their last five fixtures.

Most notably, they defeated table toppers South Shields 2-1 on Boxing Day with goals from Paul Blackett and Alex White.

HEAD TO HEAD

Warrington claimed all three points when the two sides met earlier in the season.

The Yellows travelled to the Towbar Express Stadium in October 2019, with a single goal from Tony Gray enough to separate the two sides after 90 minutes.

MANAGER’S COMMENTS

Ahead of the fixture, manager Paul Carden said: “We know what Whitby are about. They’re a tough side and renowned for being a tough, physical side with talented players. You’ve got be on your guard and be on your game. Like we see every week, there’s results that you don’t expect and results that you’re not surprised about. We need to make sure that we’re on it tomorrow.

“We’ve been disappointed. The results we’ve had of late, we’ve been in front in a lot of these draws and given points way. But when you look at the form, it’s one defeat in 11. I know it’s all ifs, buts and maybes, but we should at least win four or five of them draws.

“If you won two of the draws, then the league is tighter. But, they’ve been draws and we’ve got to make sure that we turn those draws into wins. Like I’ve said, if we weren’t creating chances I’d be worried, but we’ve been creating chances and that’s the infuriating thing.

“People are asking, why aren’t we doing this and why aren’t we doing that, and if I knew that, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer would know why United aren’t performing, and Frank Lampard would know why Chelsea aren’t and Pep Guardiola would know why City have lost the games they’ve lost and you’d be a football genius. The why is what leaves everyone scratching their heads. Not just fans, but players and management together but it won’t be through lack of work. We’ll find a way and make sure we’re doing everything to get the three points tomorrow.

On Brown’s extension earlier this week, Carden added: “I’d like to thank Harrogate Town for their cooperation and what they’ve done. I’m sure Scotty is appreciative of them and how the deal has come about.

“Everyone has seen what qualities he offers us and like I’ve said previously, a good player that’s happy in his game is a better player. He’s really enjoying his football and like us all he wants to see more wins and he’s doing everything he can and the more games he gets and the fitter he gets and the more he gets used to how we play, he’s going to be a big player for us.”
