Preview: South Shields vs Warrington Town

Warrington Town will put their 22-match unbeaten run on the line on Saturday, with a trip to newly-crowned Northern Premier League champions South Shields.

The Mariners will be presented with the trophy following the match, having clinched the title on Easter Monday following a 1-0 win at Whitby Town.

Meanwhile, the Yellows maintained their unbeaten run after a dramatic late victory over Marine, with Isaac Buckley-Ricketts firing home a stoppage-time winner.

Mark Beesley’s side won the reverse fixture 3-2 back in November – the first game of the club’s current unbeaten run – and also dumped the Mariners out of the FA Trophy a month earlier.

There are no fresh injury concerns for the Yellows as Mark Beesley looks to manage the workload of his players following a gruelling Easter schedule.

Isaac Buckley-Ricketts is pushing to start after coming off the bench to score in two of the Yellows’ last three fixtures.

Captain Josh Amis and midfielders Jay Harris and Matty McDonald could also feature, having been named amongst the substitutes on Monday.

Mark Beesley preview

Yellows manager Mark Beesley has praised the achievements of Saturday’s opponents South Shields ahead of their top-of-the-table clash.

Beesley also admits the Yellows cannot change their approach to the fixture.

“We’ve got to prepare like it’s any other game,” he said. “I must congratulate South Shields – the best team wins the league, they won the league and deservedly so.

“We’ve got to treat it like any other match. Whatever they do and whatever way they want to party, that’s their prerogative because they won the league.

“We’ll go there, treat them with respect because they’re the best team in the league, and do what we need to do.”

Warrington Town defender Dec Walker says watching the Mariners lift the trophy will give the squad increased motivation heading into the play-offs.

It is the fourth straight completed season that Town have qualified for the play-offs, having missed out on promotion in the final game of the last two seasons.

Walker said: “Obviously, you’ve got to congratulate them. They fully deserved it over the course of the season.

“It’ll be strange for us, watching them get the trophy on Saturday. It probably adds a little bit more fire in our belly, to go and make sure that we do win the play-offs.”
