Preview: Blyth Spartans vs Warrington Town

Following Tuesday night’s resounding 6-0 victory away at Buxton, Warrington Town are back on their travels as they journey to the north-east to face Blyth Spartans in the National League North.

The two teams have met twice at Cantilever Park this season, with Blyth taking three points from the Yellows in a 2-0 victory back in August before subsequently knocking Mark Beesley’s side out of the FA Trophy with a 3-1 win in November.

A win would see Town leapfrog over the Green Army in the table, with both teams currently neck and neck on 41 points, and the Yellows will be buoyed by their performance in midweek as they look to claim another important three points in their maiden campaign at this level.

Team news

Town will be without captain Josh Amis after he sustained an ankle injury in training, prior to Tuesday’s win at Buxton.

Defenders Andy White and Andre Wisdom will go back in contention to start against Blyth Spartans after recovering from an illness which sidelined them in midweek, while Mitch Duggan continues to serve his three-game suspension, as a result of a red card incurred against Tamworth earlier in the month.

Matty McDonald and Evan Gumbs will be pushing to make their second start of the season after both were selected in the starting line-up on Tuesday evening.

Mark Beesley preview

Warrington Town manager Mark Beesley is calling on his players to continue to step up in the absence of striker Josh Amis, who is set to be sidelined for several weeks with an ankle injury.

While disappointed to lose his captain, Beesley is more than convinced that his side can stand up to the task of occupying the void left behind by their talismanic forward, with Tuesday’s victory against Buxton only exacerbating his convictions.

“To lose Josh Amis at any time of the year is a hammer blow for us, but we have to dust ourselves down and get on with it,” Beesley said.

“We’ve done that all season – we’ve lost big players and others have stood up in their place, so it’s up to the players to do that now. We have to find a different way of playing, which is fine.

“We may have to change shape a few times but it is what it is.

“We’ll have to find a way of getting the ball down a bit better. Hopefully, he comes back sooner rather than later to give us another option.”
