New Warrington Town captain and leadership group revealed

Warrington Town manager Mark Beesley has appointed striker Josh Amis as the new club captain.

Amis, 27, succeeds Mark Roberts, who hung up his boots following the play-off final against Scarborough Athletic at the end of last season.

A leadership group has also been appointed, as revealed at the club’s Season Launch event at Cantilever Park on Wednesday.

Beesley said: “Josh was vice-captain last year and so he will now be club captain.

“We also have a leadership group, so if Josh isn’t playing, there’s three ‘captains’ to choose from. That’s Sean Williams, Jay Harris and Bohan Dixon.

“They’ll decide who will be captain on the day. They’re leaders within their own right, and between them they’ll say ‘I’ll be captain’ because of this and because of that.”

Popular striker Amis will enter his fifth season at the club in 2022/23. To date, he has scored 37 goals in 116 appearances.

He scored the winner in the play-off final victory over South Shields in 2019, and also scored in last season’s play-off final.

Amis added: “It’s my fifth season now so I’ve been here a while and it’s a good club to be at. Obviously the coaching staff, Toby and everyone around the club make it a nice place to be, and that’s what keeps me coming back each year.

“I like to have a bit of a craic with the lads and things like that keeps the lads together and keeps the fun side of football there as well, rather than everything being so serious.

EVAN GUMBS: Ambitious Yellows ready to kick on

“Every single person that’s here this season wants to be here, most of us from last season have stayed and it’s because we want to be involved in driving the club forward.”

Williams returned to the club early last season and made his 100th start for the Yellows in the play-off final.

Also starting his fifth season with the club is Dixon, who is four starts short of reaching a century of games, while Harris made 36 appearances in his first season at the club last term.
