New recruit Mikey Howard ready to prove himself at Warrington Town

New Warrington Town forward Mikey Howard says he hopes to put his best foot forward and help the Yellows realise their play-off ambitions.

The 22-year-old joined the club from NWCFL side Skelmersdale United on the Pitching In Northern Premier League’s transfer deadline day. 

He has been in fine form for Skem this season, netting 27 times in 47 appearances to help put the club in a position to battle it out for a play-off spot. 

Howard will be available for the Yellows following the conclusion of the Blueboys’ 2021/22 season, and he admits he is already excited by the prospect of linking up with his new Yellows team-mates.

“I’m really excited to join up with the boys,” he said. “I know that [Mark] Beesley has been in contact throughout the season, and I felt it was probably the right move at this time in my career.

“I’ve played 47 games so far this season, and it’s probably the fittest that I’ve been in my life. 

“It’s a good thing at a young age, being able to play regular football. I’m in the best condition that I’ve been in for years.”

Howard, formerly on the books of Championship side Preston North End, has previous experience at this level following time spent on loan at Hednesford Town.

He has since had spells at Stalybridge Celtic, Morecambe and Marine, before linking up with Skelmersdale at the start of the 2021/22 season.

Now, though, he insists he is ready to settle into new surroundings and bring his goalscoring form to Cantilever Park, when called upon. 

“I’d say that I’m probably a fast, direct player who wants to get at his man,” he said. 

“I like to get in-behind too; that’s where a lot of my goals have come from this season. I’m a direct player and like to work hard up and down the pitch.”

On meeting the supporters, he added: “I’ve played at this level before, and they’re great fans. 

“They’re always really nice to you and wish you all the best, and it does make you want to prove yourself to them because it’s their club at the end of the day. 

“I want to work hard for those supporters and help the club do well. The least I can do is give it my all and score goals.” 

Joining a new club during a crucial play-off push could be seen as a challenge for some players, but Howard is adamant that it’s a scenario he will relish. 

“We’re in the same situation [as Skelmersdale],” the 22-year-old added. “I know they’re two leagues lower, but there’s still the excitement that you could go up. 

“Obviously, as a forward player, people focus more on you to score the goals. You do get a buzz from that, and hopefully I can chip in with one or two goals along the way.”
