Matty McDonald: We need to make home advantage count

Midfielder Matty McDonald hopes to see Warrington Town bounce back from their recent struggles, and believes the squad are more than capable of fulfilling expectations this season.

Since joining the club in July of last year from Crewe Alexandra, the 19-year-old has struggled with injuries and spent time at Bootle on loan.

However, McDonald enjoyed an injury-free pre-season with Mark Beesley’s squad and has gone on to feature nine times in all competitions for Town in 2022/23.

He also scored his first goal for the club in last Tuesday’s 3-2 defeat to Bamber Bridge at the Sir Tom Finney Stadium.

“The result wasn’t what we wanted, and it took us to go 2-0 down before we started to play,” he said. 

”It was a relief really to score my first goal, but it would’ve been nice for it to lead to a better result.”

The Yellows have a short run of home fixtures ahead of them as they face Radcliffe in their next game at Cantilever Park – a side who sit 11 places above them in the Northern Premier League table. 

Despite entering Saturday’s game in contrasting form, McDonald is hopeful that the squad can turn a corner and put their best foot forward.

He also stressed the importance of home advantage as they look to end a run of three straight defeats in all competitions.

“I think that with any team, you’re usually more comfortable playing at home,” McDonald added.

“Now more than ever we need to take advantage of that and use the home advantage to get us back to our high standards. 

“The crowd is vital in that, and hopefully they can drive us forward and make for a change in our results.”
