Matty McDonald: It’s time to put our foot down

Warrington Town midfielder Matty McDonald says their recent good form gives them the impetus needed to push on in 2023.

The Yellows are unbeaten in eight league matches, winning three and drawing five. 

Ahead of Whitby Town’s visit to Cantilever Park this weekend, McDonald says the squad are keen to keep pushing pressure on the teams around them in the Northern Premier League table. 

“I think we are all a little disappointed still with the amount we are drawing,” he admitted.

“Looking at some of the games, we have had plenty of chances to win them, but having an unbeaten streak is great and it gives us motivation not to lose it.

“The squad is confident, and we need to put our foot down now heading into the second half of the season.”

Mark Beesley’s side have come from behind in each of their last three fixtures to pick up five points from a possible nine on the road.

The most recent rescue act saw them net a late equaliser against Atherton Collieries in midweek, on a difficult Skuna Stadium playing surface which restricted both teams’ ability to play flowing football. 

“Coming from behind like that, it shows a togetherness and spirit in the squad, which is evident, and that’s massive to grind out points and get us right up there,” McDonald said.

“I think it helps when we have the players we have who can come off the bench. The starting XI changes from week to week, but we always have quality that can change a game.

“I think Atherton was another game where you look at our chances and think we should be coming away with a win, but having been 1-0 down on a pitch that hinders how we like to play massively, I think we are quite happy to take a point away from home.”
