Mark Beesley: The lads raised their game

Warrington Town boss Mark Beesley admits he was pleased with his team’s display as they kept their winning run going in the league with a 3-1 victory over Guiseley on Saturday. 

First half goals from Stefan Mols and Jay Harris set the Yellows on their way at Nethermoor, with Matty McDonald wrapping up victory in second half stoppage time after Lewis Whitnam’s late goal for the hosts set up a grandstand finish. 

Saturday’s win means Town have won their last four league matches, scoring 11 goals and conceding just twice.

“At times in the first half we played some really good stuff,” Beesley said post-match.

“I didn’t think we started particularly great but played our way into the game and scored two great goals. 

“In the middle part of the second half, I thought we could have kept the ball a little better, rather than trying to get Connor or Eddie in with one pass.

“It’s a good place to come and play. The lads enjoyed it and raised to the standard of the pitch. 

“We looked composed at times and I was pleased with that. Of course we can do better, and we’ll try to push and push to get better every week.”

Beesley was also quick to single out the contribution of defensive duo Evan Gumbs and Tom Hannigan, who have started together in every league game so far in 2022/23.

“The two of them have been outstanding all season,” Beesley said. “They’re robust, they’re strong, but they’re also comfortable in possession.

“They organised around them today, and playing against a good striker, they handled him really well.

“There’s a good understanding between the two of them.”

The Yellows return to action on Tuesday with a tough trip to Whitby Town. 

Despite going in search of a fourth straight league win on the road, Beesley insists his side cannot afford to look too far ahead as they prepare to lock horns with the Seasiders.

“I don’t think you can think about the next game. You’ve got to deal with what’s in front of you.

“Tuesday will be a tough game. It’s very difficult up there and they had a great win against Bamber Bridge recently.

“They’ve picked up in recent weeks, so it’ll be really tough.”
