Mark Beesley: Spirit and togetherness was outstanding

Warrington Town manager Mark Beesley has praised the spirit of his players after they recorded their third successive away win thanks to a 1-0 triumph at Lancaster City.

Connor Woods’ first half goal was enough to see the Yellows claim victory at the Giant Axe and climb to fifth in the Northern Premier League table.

Tuesday’s result came after an emphatic 4-0 win at Liversedge on Saturday, and Beesley admits he is delighted with the way his team stood firm against the Dolly Blues, despite playing much of the second half with 10 men after Mitch Duggan was sent off.

“I thought the spirit and togetherness that the boys showed was absolutely outstanding,” he said. “Bodies on the line, down to 10 men and getting in a good shape without the ball – it was brilliant to see.

“Saturday was a different type of win, and this was a good victory, at a difficult place to come to.”

A neat first-half finish means on-loan Southport forward Woods has now scored in successive games for the Yellows, and Beesley was quick to praise his impact. 

“His work rate since he arrived at the club has been outstanding, and that’s testament to not only him, but Luke Duffy out wide, and what they give us. 

“He’s a goal threat, scoring two in two, and long may it continue.”

On keeping back-to-back clean sheets, Beesley added: “The two of them [Evan Gumbs and Tom Hannigan] are really good players, and we spoke a few weeks ago about how well we’ve defended, but conceded in every game through individual errors.

“In the last couple of games we haven’t done that. We’ve defended well as a team, and those two have been leaders for us, alongside Jay Harris in midfield.”

The Yellows will look to make it a hat-trick of victories when Matlock Town visit Cantilever Park on Saturday. 

Beesley is expecting another tough test against a side that reached the play-off semi-finals last season.

“It’s a big game, and they’re a really good team,” he admitted. “They’ve got new management who have invested well in good players.

“They didn’t play in midweek either, so they’ll be well rested. It’s a game that we’ve got to be ready for.”
