Mark Beesley reflects on ‘great week’ for the Yellows

Warrington Town manager Mark Beesley believes the performance of his players fully merited their 2-1 win away at Blyth Spartans on Saturday.

It rounded off a fantastic week for the Yellows which started with a remarkable 6-0 thrashing of Buxton on the road on Tuesday.

Saturday’s win at Croft Park was far less straightforward, with Nicky Deverdics’ second half penalty cancelling out Bohan Dixon’s volleyed opener inside three minutes.

The game remained in the balance until 77 minutes, when Matty McDonald controlled Connor Woods’ pull-back before drilling a low shot beyond home goalkeeper Dan Langley.

Speaking post-match, Beesley said: “It’s been a great week. To go to Buxton and win and then to come here, which is a really tough place to come – they’re on a good run of form – is a great win for us.

“To be honest, I think we deserved it. At 1-0 I think we had to make more of our chances on the counter-attack. Our three-on-twos and our decision-making were poor at times, and if we made the most of that, we probably kill the game.

“I’ve got to give the lads full credit for nicking the winner after being brought back to 1-1, and I thought we saw the game out really well.

“What we’ve been good at lately is that we’re ready to counter-attack when the ball is in transition and keeping the ball well, but we didn’t do that today.

“At half-time, we wanted to make sure our shape was right and that when we got to counter-attack, we kept the ball a bit better.

“I felt we did that in the second half and that enabled us to counter-attack better, which should have meant we scored more than we did.

“There’s quality in this league, and every week we’ve got to be ready for different challenges.”

Beesley was also full of praise for Saturday’s match-winner McDonald, who scored his second goal in as many games following a return to the starting line-up.

The attack-minded midfielder missed several months earlier in the season due to a knee injury and has been forced to bide his time before being given the chance to start.

“He was probably one of our players of the year last year, so we’ve missed him,” Beesley added.

“He’s had a really complex injury so we’ve had to be careful with him, but it’s hard not to leave him on the pitch.

“He’s dynamic, powerful and he’s got ability. He gives us that goal threat constantly, and his composure for the goal was outstanding.”
