Mark Beesley reacts to draw against Scarborough

Warrington Town manager Mark Beesley admits that a draw was a fair result following his side’s 2-2 draw away at Scarborough Athletic on Good Friday.

The Yellows were pegged back twice in the clash at the Flamingo Land Stadium, with Connor Woods’ early strike and Peter Clarke’s header being cancelled out by Cameron Wilson and a wonderful goal from Oliver Dyson eight minutes before stoppage time.

Despite leading for significant portions of the match, a late penalty for the hosts threatened to leave Mark Beesley’s side empty-handed, but goalkeeper Dan Atherton ensured the spoils would be shared after keeping out Harry Green’s spot kick.

Speaking after the match, Beesley admitted that his side was disappointed to not come away with all three points, but stated a draw was probably a fair reflection of the game.

“It was one of those games where we could have lost it, but we could definitely have won it,” he said.

“We’re a little bit disappointed but also, you’re thinking you’d take a point.

“It’s a difficult place to come – we’ve travelled to Peterborough in midweek and then to come here just three days later, we’ve taken four points so it’s probably a good week.

“To go 2-1 up and then having a great chance to go 3-2 up means it’s a little disappointing, but Dan has saved a penalty so it’s probably a fair result in the end.”

Connor Woods fired the Yellows into the lead after just three minutes for his 14th goal of the season, but the Seadogs were on level terms just before half time thanks to a finish from winger Cameron Wilson.

A corner from Sean Williams in the 74th minute found an unmarked Peter Clarke at the far post who headed Town back into the lead.

But their lead would only last for six minutes when Oliver Dyson rifled a spectacular effort into the top corner from 30 yards out to ensure the hosts would take a point from the clash.

Reflecting further on the game, Beesley said: “We had a great start. We spoke a lot about set pieces and we had some plans there so that’s pleasing.

“We’ve not scored enough from set-pieces for me and I’m always harping on at the lads about scoring from set pieces, especially the defenders.

“It’s disappointing we didn’t hold on but to be fair, it’s probably goal of the season for their second.

“It was an absolute wonder-strike. You’re almost wanting him to shoot from there but he’s caught it sweet and it’s flown into the top corner. There’s not much you can do about those.”
