Mark Beesley proud of Yellows’ performance at Scunthorpe

Warrington Town manager Mark Beesley says he felt his side deserved at least a point from Saturday’s trip to Scunthorpe United.

Despite carving out numerous chances at Glanford Park against the high-flying National League North giants, the Yellows were thwarted on numerous occasions by inspired home goalkeeper Ross Fitzsimons, with the Scunthorpe shot-stopper at his best to deny Josh Amis twice and Connor Woods’ long-range effort.

Those missed opportunities would prove to be decisive as Callum Roberts headed home the only goal of the game – a rebound early in the second half.

Discussing the performance of his side post-match, Beesley admits his players can feel aggrieved to have left Lincolnshire empty-handed.

“I thought we were excellent,” he said.

“To come here against a side that will definitely be in the top two and put in a performance like that was outstanding.

“We’ve had a right go. Their goalkeeper got Man of the Match, which basically tells you the story of the game.

“We had a game plan – they are a good team, well coached with good movement, so we had to make sure our shape out of possession was good, and it was.

“Their goal is a great bit of play from them. They’ve opened us up and it’s a great strike from someone who probably shouldn’t be playing in this league.

“Dan [Atherton] makes a great save. We’re thinking the rebound is possibly offside but I think the officials were here for the day out as well. We were never going to get it.

“He didn’t really have a save to make until the goal, which is credit to what the lads have done.

“We’ve come up against a full-time team in a big stadium, but we’ve been outstanding throughout.

“We deserved a draw at least – their keeper has made three outstanding saves, and on another day we might get a penalty.”

The fixtures keep coming for the Yellows, who visit North West Counties League side Ashville on Tuesday night (7:45pm kick-off).

Andre Wisdom will miss that fixture, although the hamstring injury he suffered at Darlington isn’t expected to keep his sidelined for more than two weeks.

Another positive is the impending return of experienced midfielder Jay Harris. Beesley has confirmed that he is set to gain his first minutes of the season on Tuesday night.
