Mark Beesley: Positives to take from Ashton United defeat

Warrington Town boss Mark Beesley says his side can take plenty of heart from their performance against Ashton United, despite tasting defeat for the first time this season.

Goals from Callum Saunders and Sam Sheridan helped the hosts to a 2-1 victory at Hurst Cross, with Yellows winger Luke Duffy netting a late consolation – his first of the season.

Town came close on a number of occasions without finding the target, and although Beesley has called on his players to be more ruthless in the final third, he insists that goals will soon start to flow.

“I’m disappointed with the result but really pleased with the performance,” he said.

“I think that’s the best we’ve been [this season]. We controlled the game and had six or eight clear chances that on another day we’d score. We’ve hit the bar, we’ve hit the post, we’ve missed one-on-ones.

“They’re good defensively, they get men behind the ball and keep it tight.

“It’s hard to break 11 men down, but at times I thought we got behind them. We just need to be more ruthless in front of goal.”

He added: “I’m confident that with the forwards and attacking players that we’ve got, we’ll score lots of goals throughout the season.

“We couldn’t have done much more today. Their keeper was probably their Man of the Match, which tells its own story.”

There is no time for the Yellows to rest, with a Bank Holiday Monday clash with Nantwich Town on the horizon.

Ahead of that match, Beesley has confirmed that Josh Amis is struggling with illness and will continue to be monitored.

Meanwhile, checks will also be made on Luke Duffy, who is carrying a knock, and Jordan Buckley, who continues to work his way back to full fitness.’
