Mark Beesley: One of the best performances I’ve seen

Warrington Town boss Mark Beesley was overjoyed with his side’s performance on Saturday as the Yellows bested promotion contenders South Shields 3-2 to claim three points.

Stefan Mols fired Town back into the game from the penalty spot after conceding within the first 10 minutes, before a second half finish from Matty McDonald took the Yellows in front, with Sean Williams coming off of the bench to seal the win with a fantastic free-kick.

The win sees Warrington Town move back into the top five, just five points behind current league leaders Gainsborough Trinity, who have played one more game than the Yellows.

“I thought we were excellent today,” Beesley said post-match.

“That was up there with one of the best performances that I’ve seen from a Warrington Town team.

“We had a bit of everything: a bit of quality at times, a bit of grit and determination and also a bit of togetherness and teamwork.

“Against a top team, let’s not kid ourselves, if you finish above South Shields, you probably win the league.”

The Yellows have now beaten South Shields twice in the space of a month, knocking the Mariners out of the FA Trophy at the end of October, and now defeating a much stronger outfit in the league.

While Beesley believes that the win solidifies his team as promotion contenders, he urged his side to iron out their inconsistencies as they progress further into the season.

“We’ve got a good squad, we’re a good team, we don’t look too far forward but we’ve got to take those inconsistencies out of our game.

“If we’re not on our game, we don’t pick up points and that is what we’ve got to change because there will be times between now and the end of the season when we’re not on our game, and we’ve got to pick up points on those days.

“When we do play well we tend to pick up points, so it’s important that we do both of those jobs.”

The Yellows face their fourth straight fixture at Cantilever Park next Saturday against Stalybridge Celtic.

Despite having just four games remaining before the new year, Beesley insists that his side must take each game at a time.

“We’ve got to look at what’s in front of us,” he said. “We’ve got to look at what’s next week and deal with that first.

“I’ve said this all along, there’s some good teams in this league and if you don’t respect your opponent, you’ll get a bloody nose.

“It happened to us a few weeks ago against Marske United. They were out of form but turned up here and won 1-0.

“We’ve got to be ready for every game and we’ve got to be on top of our game all of the time.”
